Cleaning your roof can increase the lifespan as it prevents the growth of moss, bacteria and lichen which can dig roots into the shingles and cause it to leak prematurely and also cause discoloring and granule loss. The black streaks on your roof are a form of algae known as gloeocapsa magma. The algae creates a fertile area for moss, bacteria and algae to grow.
